114 : White Horse Cellar

This auction is closed, biddings on the lot are no longer possible

The White Horse Distillery was a lesser-known Irish whisky distillery once located in Mountrath, County Laois. It took its name from the nearby White Horse River, said to be so called due to the pale colour of its waters, reportedly a result of the distillery’s operations in the heart of the town. Now long vanished, the distillery remains part of local folklore. It is believed that in the 1800s, either the distillery itself or the rights to the White Horse name were sold to Scottish interests. If true, this would mark a fascinating twist in the fortunes of Irish and Scottish distilling, especially given the later success of the White Horse Scotch whisky brand, which was formally established in Scotland in 1861 and went on to achieve global recognition. This historical connection, whether direct or coincidental, adds a layer of intrigue to the legacy of a once-thriving local Irish distillery. The bottle is very dated in appearance. There is no original gold foil seal present; however, it remains corked and unopened.
